About
Building Castles is a construction company specializing in eco building. We offer new builds in stylish conventional construction methods, but also offer eco building such as earth brick, straw bale, poured earth, rammed earth. Over the years we’ve also constructed dwelling, studios and minor dwellings out of other variations such as light earth construction. With our experienced team of builders, we do everything from new builds to minor renovations and general carpentry.
Our Story
Crafting dreams
Building castles began with our own journey to create our own home. We sought to build not just a house, but a home that would last. Therefore, when we looked at construction, we were determined to find solutions that offered:
• Affordability,
• Environmental sustainability
• Be a dwelling that was durable and long lasting
• Avoid materials that would wear out after not much more than a decade
In 2006, we constructed a 360sqm home out of adobe mud bricks. This earth brick home boasted 300mm thick solid walls, a poured earth floor in lieu of cold stone concrete pad, exposed wooden rafter beams of Lawson’s cypress, solar water heating, wetback fire, louvers, and durable colour steel roof.
Both external and internal walls were solid thick earth bricks, with no conventional insulation or gib, this provided a durable and eco friendly home that was impressively warm and cosy through winter due to the natural properties of adobe bricks. It was also amazingly cost effective as a building material, “dirt cheap”, is a phrase that rings very true.
